West Midlands Combined Authority Mayor launches 'Chatty Cafés' - a scheme to help tackle loneliness and social isolation

Are you a coffee shop, café, business or community venue?

West Midlands Combined Authority Mayor, Andy Street, has launched 'Chatty Cafés' a scheme helping to tackle loneliness and social isolation.

"Conversation, big and small, is important for our wellbeing on many levels. Research by Age UK shows that keeping socially active helps us maintain good physical and mental health, and also supports our thinking skills.

"Through my former role as the CEO of John Lewis, I know that our local high streets and coffee shops are the places that bring us together.

However, sometimes we all need a bit of help to make new connections.

That’s why I am campaigning to get coffee shops and other venues from across the West Midlands signed up to a fantastic national initiative called the Chatty Café scheme.

The scheme has a very simple idea: coffee shops designate a ‘Chatter & Natter’ table where customers can sit if they are happy to talk to each other.

A Chatter & Natter table brings people together and everyone is invited. If you’re on your own, in a couple, with a friend, if you’re a carer (why not sit there with the person you care for), mums and babies, dads and babies, grandparents and babies, young people, older people and anyone in between.

My goal is for every high street coffee shop in the region to have a Chatter & Natter table, and for our local business to be at the heart of creating a less lonely, chattier region.

This means that no matter where you live you can benefit from a bit of company and conversation with your cuppa."
