Train with Relate to be a Relate Couples Counsellor

Relate Birmingham is offering training to qualified counsellors to work with couples and the prospect of potential employment with them.

Successful completion of this course will equip counsellors who are already qualified to Level 5 or above to work as Couple Counsellors within Relate.

Application Criteria:

To apply for a placement you will already have a Level 5 diploma or a higher qualification in a relevant area of counselling or psychotherapy. You must be able to commit to attend all the training dates and complete all the course requirements, as well as attending monthly clinical supervision and delivering 50 hours of relationship counselling to couples and individuals.

An enhanced DBS Disclosure will be required for this post and the cost is to be met by the delegate.

Course Fees:

The cost of the course is £1200.

Fees may be made in full prior to the start of the course or by payment plan which would need to be fulfilled by block 4, 7th February 2020.

Support may be available to students to subsidise a place. This will be considered on a case by case basis and must be made known in your application.

Creative Black Country expands to include Dudley borough

Creative Black Country has been awarded £1,403,154 of National Lottery funding through Arts Council England’s Creative People and Places programme (CPP) to expand its current CPP activity to include Dudley borough, in partnership with Black Country Living Museum and Dudley Council for Voluntary Service (CVS).

Black Country Together has led the Creative Black Country CPP project in Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton since 2015, with Arts Council investment of almost £4.5 million to date. Since then it has been producing creative events, performances and activities bringing inspirational cultural experiences to thousands of local people.

This includes the Creative Communities and Open Access programmes that support community groups to experience the arts and produce their own events; Funny Things comedy programme celebrating Black Country humour; and the 100 Masters campaign raising the profile of expertise, innovation and craftsmanship. It also includes the unique Desi Pubs partnership between artists and pub landlords, which helped redefine pub culture in the Black Country, reinventing the traditional handcrafted pub sign using Punjabi text.

Arts and culture have a significant role to play in building thriving villages, towns and cities, bringing people together and making them proud of where they work and live. Creative People and Places allows more people to choose, create and take part in arts and cultural activity – encouraging long-term collaboration between local people, artists and partners, and embedding lasting change in communities.

Peter Knott, Area Director, Arts Council England, said: “Arts and culture make the places we live vibrant and exciting, entertaining and inspiring, benefiting our wellbeing and helping local economies.

“This National Lottery investment in Creative Black Country will see the team build on their achievements so far, with great work such as the Desi Pubs projects and 100 Masters, ensuring more people across Dudley and the Black Country can take part in and enjoy creativity in their communities.”

Creative Director of CBC, Parminder Dosanjh, said: “We are over the moon. Expanding to Dudley feels like a natural step; the prospect of working as a regional programme in the Black Country is hugely exciting and we look forward to local residents benefitting from the investment.

“We are thrilled to be working in partnership with Black Country Living Museum and Dudley Council for Voluntary Service, who will play an instrumental role in supporting the expansion programme going forward.”

Creative Black Country is one of 12 successful arts projects to receive a share of almost £17.5 million National Lottery funding to create arts and cultural experiences in areas across England where people tend to engage less with arts and culture. These twelve projects, part of the Creative People and Places programme, will take place between 2019-2023 and will be co-created with their local communities.

Andy Gray, Chief Executive of Dudley CVS, said: “We’re delighted to work with Creative Black Country to build audiences and bring more opportunities to the people of Dudley. We’re looking forward to supporting communities across the Borough to create and choose the arts activities and experiences that are right for them. Shared Lives Scheme Thriving in the Black Country

It is a little over two years since national charity, Camphill Village Trust decided to add Shared Lives to their already established Stourbridge community in the Black Country. In this time, the new scheme has gone from strength to strength, networking closely with other community-based organisations to gain momentum. Not only has the charity been awarded the contract to deliver a Shared Lives service on behalf of Dudley MBC, they have also recruited 12 new households to boot.

Shared Lives is still a relatively unknown model of care that is similar to foster care, where specially trained Carers open up their home and support people with additional/complex needs to lead as independent life as possible and stay connected with the local community. Currently, there are approximately 14,000 people being supported up and down the UK in this way.

New Carers like Chris and Nicky from Kingswinford who were approved by an Independent Panel last November and were carefully matched with Alex in March of this year as part of a live-in Arrangement, are now starting to reap the benefits of this fresh approach.

For Alex this has meant getting used to new family routines to further develop his independence. ‘Where I lived before, I was getting up when I wanted and eating ready meals every day, but I’ve got lots more things to do now and I’ve learned how to cook my favourite meal, spaghetti bolognese…and I’d never touched an iron, but Chris has shown me how to do my own washing and ironing.’

With the support of Chris and Nicky, Alex is also starting to take on new challenges, ‘I’ve written to the Black Country Museum about volunteering and I’m also about to go to college as well. I’m hoping to do Health & Social Care and Child Care Level 2, as I’d like to work in a nursery or for people with disabilities.’

Chris and Nicky added ‘Before Alex was matched to live with us, he was leading a quite unfulfilled lifestyle. I think it would be fair to say he did not have certain life skills that we possibly all take for granted. Now, just a few months on, Alex has really grasped the opportunities that have been presented to him, he has settled well into our family set up and is flourishing within his new environments.

As this is our first Shared Lives Arrangement, the scheme has been so encouraging; right from the assessment and induction process, we were always confident about Kate and the team supporting us. All we have offered is our time, experience and knowledge, so it’s very satisfying when people say they can already see a change in Alex. That’s when it sinks in, that we are providing a nurturing and caring environment for Alex to develop the skills, which will one day will enable him to lead an independent life of his own’.

Registered Manager, Kate Morgan commented ‘The last two years have been quite incredible which has taken considerable time and effort from everyone involved, but as you can see, we have expanded rapidly as a result. In the beginning, we had a very clear plan in that we wanted to raise the profile of the new scheme across the area as quickly as possible, which would enable us to attract a steady stream of new Carers. This was always going to be a bit of a gamble as we had not yet signed a contract with Dudley, but we were confident in our strategy, as we had already recruited staff with previous experience in the independent Shared Lives sector.’

The scheme is nearly a full year into the new contract and has already set up 11 Arrangements, receiving over 60 enquiries with a variety of additional support needs from learning disability, autism, mental ill health, through to older people and hospital discharges. Kate emphasised further ‘Dudley council are very ambitious and wish to see the scheme grow significantly over the coming years; we are working in close partnership to ensure we receive suitable referrals and use every platform available to promote Shared Lives. After a recent marketing campaign, we are currently in the process of assessing a further six new households, with another 5 in the early stages, so we definitely have our work cut out going forward.

Shared Lives offers opportunity for those people with the right values and commitment to develop a social care career and earn up to £29K annually as a self-employed Carer…it’s such a rewarding role which really challenges the assumptions of what can be achieved within an ordinary family home.’

Huw John, Chief Executive of Camphill Village Trust added ‘It is important for any charity today to be able to respond to the changing social care world and the Shared Lives model sits neatly within our existing services and community-based ethos. The new scheme has brought a lot of energy to our Stourbridge community, which is now at the centre to a network of Shared Lives Arrangements across the region. This not only provides new housing and support options but also offers people the chance to lead the life of opportunity they deserve.’

We are recruiting volunteers!Are you interested in volunteering for a charity? On August the 20th 2019 we will be holding a volunteer recruitment day at our hub on the Bushey Fields Hospital estate.

As a charity, volunteers are important to us and help us to support the work that we do in different ways.

During the recruitment you will get the chance to learn more about Dudley Mind and the work that we do to support people who are experiencing mental health difficulties in the local area. You will also get to learn about the management, services and some of our policies.

We will also explain to you how we support our volunteers and what we expect from you as a volunteer.

Architectural Heritage Fund

The Architectural Heritage Fund have recently launched their new Transforming Places Through Heritage programme available for projects involving a heritage building located in a high street/town centre in England where the focus is to revitalise the high street or town centre. They will support projects contributing to high street/town centre transformation helping them become thriving places, strengthening local communities and encouraging local economies to prosper maximising positive social impact.

The programme comprises five different funding opportunities as follows:

• Project Viability Grants up to £15,000 for early viability and feasibility work that explores different options for reuse/testing a single option.

• Project Development Grants up to £100,000 for capital project development costs (maximum 90% of the cost of the work).

• Crowdfunding Challenge Grants up to £25,000 to match fund crowdfunding campaigns.

• Transformational Project Grants up to £350,000 (capital projects) for the repair, restoration and adaptation of a building to bring it into use (maximum 90% of the cost of work). They expect to make 10-15 of these large grants during this four year programme.

• Community Shares Booster Grants up to £10,000.

Kings Fund

The Kings Fund have recently announced the launch of the 2020 GSK IMPACT Awards that reward organisations doing excellent work to improve people's health and wellbeing. Applications are invited from registered charities that are at least three years old and working in a health related field with annual income £80,000-£2.5M. There are three levels of awards in the range £3,000-£40,000 as follows:

1. One overall winner will receive £40,000.

2. Up to nine other winners will receive £30,000 each.

3. All ten winners will receive free training and development valued at £9,500.

4. Up to ten runners up will each receive awards of £3,000.

The deadline for receipt of applications is 23rd September 2019.

Herefordshire Community Foundation (HCF)

Herefordshire Community Foundation operate a number of grant programmes with amounts available varying from £100 to in excess of £1,000. There are two funds available for projects outside of Herefordshire:

1. Joanies Fund offering grants up to £5,000 to organisations working with children and young people aged up to 25 focusing on projects leading to employment, further education, accreditation and integration. They prioritise innovative projects with an entrepreneurial approach and strong evidence of consultation with young people. Apply by January, May or September annually.

2. Judith Shrimpton Fund for organisations working to relieve needs of people with disabilities. Applications can be made at any time and, if applying on behalf of an individual, it is recommended that initial contact is made with HCF to discuss the need.

British & Foreign School Society

The British and Foreign School Society Grants to Charities programme supports educational and training institutions that are registered charities providing funding for up to 3 years for new work. They are interested in education/training for children/young people aged up to 25 widening educational access/opportunities for them reducing barriers to achievement maximising their educational opportunities with priority for projects in areas of deprivation or educational disadvantage.

The Grants Committee meet three times a year and the remaining deadline in 2019 is 19th August for meeting 16th October. In 2020 deadlines are 31st December 2019, 10th April and 19th August for meetings 26th February, 10th June and 14th October.
